Black Creek Pinewood Derby Construction Rules
Each boy, under the guidance of parents and den leaders, must build his own car. Each year, the Scouts must work to improve their skills and build a new car. A Cub Scout may not use a car from a previous year (however siblings/adults may use a car from a previous year) Eligibility Eligibility is broken down into two classifications: Competition and Open. Derby cars must meet Classification Rules. Competition class entrants must meet all Construction Rules. Open class will include all cars not meeting Construction Rules. Awards are based on class. No cross class awards exist.
Classification Rules Competition Class: Cars must belong to any active Tiger, Cub and Webelos Scouts from Black Creek for the current Scouting year. All competitors must be current concerning Pack and Den dues and cars must meet the construction rules below. Open Class: Cars of family members of eligible Competition Class Scouts. Disqualified Competition Class derby cars can be entered in this class.
Construction Rules Build Origin Competition Class Cars must have been built in the current Scouting Calendar year Open Class cars have no restriction on build calendar year
Dimension These dimensions are required Maximum length shall not exceed 7 inches Maximum overall width, including wheels and axles, shall not exceed 2 ¾” Maximum width between wheels shall be 1 ¾” inch so that the car will clear the center guide strip Bottom clearance between car and track should be 3/8” The wheelbase (the distance between the front and rear axles and the location of the axles) shall not be changed
Weight and Appearance Weight shall not exceed 5 ounces. Reading of the official race scale shall be considered final. Weight added to the car must be firmly affixed to it. No loose materials of any kind will be permitted. Cars shall be constructed using the pinewood block supplied with the kit. Alternate car body materials are not permitted. Details such as steering wheel, driver, spoiler, decals, and painting details are permitted as long as these details do not cause the dimension, weight & appearance specifications to be exceeded. Cars with wet paint will not be accepted at the Weigh-in The car may be of any style but no part of the car may extend beyond the front bumper, which rests against the starting pin.
Wheels and Axles Only the official Scout Grand Prix wheels and axles can be used. Axles may be polished. Wheels may be lightly sanded to remove the mold projection on the tread. This light sanding is the only modification permitted. Beveling, tapering, thin sanding, to wafer, or lathe turning of the wheels is prohibited. The outside bead detail must be visible on the wheel. Wheel bearings, washers or bushings are not permitted The car shall not ride on any type of springs The car must be free-wheeling, with no starting devices or other propulsion Lubrication: Cars will be lubricated at the packing station We use only dry powdered lubricants, such as graphite. Oils and silicones sprays may soften the plastic wheels and collect on the track. Derby cars having non dry lubricants applied will be rejected
Inspection Each car must pass the official inspection before it may compete. The inspection team has the right to disqualify those cars that do not meet the construction rules. Car owners will be informed of any violations and given an opportunity to correct them prior to the close of inspection All inspected cars will be placed in a holding area until race time. If a car owner wants to remove their car from the holding area for any reason, the car must be re-inspected before returning to the holding area. During competition the cars will remain in a holding area.
Program director for black creek has final say on all judgment calls his decision is finial.
Black Creek District Pinewood Derby Registration Form The 2009 Black Creek District Pinewood Derby will be held on Saturday, February 21st 2009 at the Henrietta fire station #6 East River Road and Erie Station Road, West Henrietta, NY Please fill out this form completely and return it as soon as possible to the person and address below with your check. This registration form and the appropriate fee must be turned in no later than the evening of February 14, 2009. Race is limited to the first 200 entrants on a first come basis. DO NOT turn this form and payment into the Council Office.
